Trust Docs: #1009 “Between Stigma & Healthcare

Trust Docs 1000 (11/30 minute programs) airs Thursdays at 2 a.m. beginning 12/5 – TRUST DOCS, which is in partnership with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, takes viewers around the globe to explore under-reported stories about critical social issues through personal stories from individuals. This magazine series utilizes short documentaries to translate headlines into human experiences and covers a range of issues including the effects of war, the fight for refugee rights, struggles to adjust to climate change, housing and land rights, global mental health, changing gender identities and more.

#1009 “Between Stigma & Healthcare” – Many communities around the world see disease and mental illness not as something to be treated, but as something to be feared. As a result, many suffering from curable conditions are stigmatized within their communities. But through education and organizing, some people are challenging these stigmas and addressing health issues previously considered taboo.

2019 Youth Media Awards-January 28th

The Youth Media Awards will be announced at ALA Midwinter on January 28th at 8:00 am Pacific Time (11:00 am Eastern). These include The Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards.

These awards are selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, and are recognized worldwide for the quality of writing and artwork they represent.

Blue Ridge Parkway: A Long & Winding Road

A historical documentary concerning the most visited segment of the National Park Service. It explores the impact on people along the route and the conflicts inherent in building the 469-mile Parkway. A diverse cast of Americans join the journey including Alec Baldwin, Rosanne Cash, Chuck D, Emmylou Harris, Ethan Hawke, Van Jones, Mike Myers, and Dan Rather, among many others.

Walking The Camino: Six Ways to Santiago

American fascination with the Camino is exploding. SESSION 1: Access to Books: Game Changer for Kids 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Children with meaningful access to books achieve at higher levels and experience greater engagement with reading. In this session, examine the current research on book access in schools, libraries, and homes; discuss intellectual and cultural access concerns including diversity and leveling; and explore resources and strategies for developing and sustaining high-quality classroom library collections that support students’ reading lives. SESSION 2: Invest in Children’s Reading Lives All Year 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM

The institutional emphasis on standardized testing places students’ reading test scores in front of children’s reading lives. Extensive research proves that children with positive reading identities and the opportunity to read independently at school and home achieve at higher levels on reading tests. Sit and Be Fit (1700) (10/30 minute programs)

A popular exercise series designed to make exercise fun, easy and safe for people of all ages. Programs focus on therapeutic exercises that make everyday activities easier to perform including core strengthening, balance work, stretching and relaxation. Host, Mary Ann Wilson, RN designs programs with physical therapists, using creative choreography and a diverse selection of music. Her warmth and encouragement effectively reaches out to people of all fitness levels and ages.
