American Masters

AMERICAN MASTERS is an ongoing series of award-winning primetime specials examining the lives, works, and creative processes of our most outstanding cultural artists. Created in 1984 by Susan Lacy and produced by Thirteen/WNET for national public television, the series is both a celebration and an exploration of creativity in America. Consisting of more than 250 hours of programming to date, AMERICAN MASTERS is a growing film library documenting the role important individuals, groups, and movements have played in the formation of our cultural identity.

  • Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer’s Journey (#2902) – airs 9/9 at 9 p.m. (Repeats 9/15 at midnight) – Discover the life and work of Mexican-American photographer Pedro E. Guerrero, who collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright and sculptors Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson. A co-presentation of VOCES and AMERICAN MASTERS.
  • Raul Julia (#3208) – airs 9/13 at 9 p.m. – Discover the life and career of Raul Julia, the charismatic, award-winning actor and humanitarian known for versatile roles on stage and screen, from Shakespearean plays to “The Addams Family.” A co-presentation of VOCES and American Masters.
  • Ted Williams – airs 9/29 at 7 p.m. – Discover the many sides of baseball great Ted Williams, including his complex relationships with his family, press and fans and his feelings about his Mexican-American background. Features Bob Costas, Wade Boggs, Roger Angell and Joey Votto.
